The Weber Portable Gas Grill Q 100 - A First-Hand Review

!±8± The Weber Portable Gas Grill Q 100 - A First-Hand Review

After having moved from a house with a backyard to an apartment building, I had to find a grill I could use in my new living space. So, I started my research for an alternative to my charcoal grill. I found online some great reviews for the Weber Q 100 Portable Gas Grill and decided to give it a try.

I had my doubts whether my food was going to be as tasty as the one grilled on charcoal but, as it turned out to be, my concerns were out of place.

First of all it's very well made and sturdy. The grill has a heavy cast iron grate unlike some cheaper grills you can find on the market, that have thin grates. The grill surface is not that big but it's enough for a family of four.

The grill heats up wonderfully and the heat is even. Every food we have made on the grill tasted great and you get a nice sear after some 6-8 minutes of preheat. The food gets done quite quickly so get a stop watch to monitor the grilling time.

I was a little concerned about the gas tanks that this grill operates on (I never used one in my life) but it's really a no-brainer. I hooked my grill up to a 5 lb propane tank (and it lasted for quite a while), but I have read that some people use larger gas tanks with an adapter hose.

The grill is so much easier to operate than a charcoal grill. It ignites at the push of a button and has a regulator to control the heat.

Since I hate cleaning my grill, I found it to be very helpful (and later read the same thing from other grill users) using the aluminum foil on the inside of the grill. So I clean the grill in no time. Furthermore you can use a foil tray for the drip pan as well.

I use another trick that saves me some cleanup: I brush the grill or the meat with oil so the food doesn't stick so much. I found the book you get with the grill to be most helpful. It had some great instructions and tips, especially the grilling time charts. Since I'm using this grill so much I bought the folding cart for this model too. It's such a great accessory to the grill. I recommend you get a grill brush as well.

I have to say I'm absolutely enthusiastic about this grill. It's really worth every penny I paid (the price is not that high though). I forgot my old charcoal grill one of the reasons being the fact that the Weber Q 100 is so much easier to use. You can prepare your food in no time and, what's important to me, you don't have to have a backyard at your disposal. Of course if you are planning a barbecue party then you should get a larger one. The Q 100 is ideal for a family of four (like mine) or if you're single, and if you don't have a couple of hours to grill. Most of the times, when I get from work, I just light my grill and have a great meal in 20 minutes.

Is Your Lawn Pump Losing Prime?

!±8± Is Your Lawn Pump Losing Prime?

Those of you that have a lawn sprinkler system connected to a pump and well setup may have experienced a problem with your pump losing its' prime. What this means is that the pump has lost the suction of water and now the pump is running dry.

If this problem is not caught quickly, your pump may continue to run dry and burn out the motor or spin off one of the impellers.

Re-priming most pumps is fairly easy. With the pump off, you take a water hose connected to an outside bib and fill up the volute (part of pump that holds water). Then turn the pump back on while continuing to run water into the pump until you hear the sound of the motor starting to smooth out, which usually means the pump is primed back up and lifting water again.

If you take the water off and then the pump does not spit out water within a minute, continue to force water back into the pump until it is lifting water from the well. After your sprinklers have run for a few minutes, turn the pump off and wait a few minutes before turning on again.

What we're doing is checking to see if the pump will hold its' prime. If you can turn the pump back on and it continues to deliver water, then you should be fine. You should check it the next day to see if it is holding the prime for a long period of time.

If after it has sat for several hours, or even just a few minutes and it has lost the prime again, then most likely you have a bad check valve or bad foot valve, depending on what kind of pump and well setup you have.

If you have a shallow well and horizontal pump, then you will need to replace the check valve, which is either a brass or PVC fitting that is usually installed directly before the inlet or suction side of the pump. To remove and replace, you need to cut the PVC pipe free and use a big pipe wrench to loosen the check valve. To replace, simply install back in and glue the pipe back together. Make sure you have the flow the correct way; there are arrows on the check valve which point the direction for the flow of water.

If you have a jet pump, then your foot valve may need to be replaced. This is not as easy as replacing a check valve because it is located on a drop pipe, which is a separate pipe inside and near the bottom of the well. This requires you to remove the casing adapter and then lift up the pipe, which can be 30 Ft to over 100 feet deep! Depending on the particular setup of your drop pipe and foot valve, it may require a few extra steps prior to just pulling the pipe up. This is not an easy task if you are inexperienced. The actually removal and replacement of the foot valve is similar to the check valve, the hardest part is usually getting the drop pipe up.

For homeowners with horizontal pumps and check valves, I encourage you to do it yourself! For those with irrigation system pump and well setups that have foot valves, I would highly recommend hiring an experienced well driller or pump technician from an irrigation company in your area.

Why The Hype Over The Weber Portable Gas Grill Q100?

!±8± Why The Hype Over The Weber Portable Gas Grill Q100?

Life circumstances being what they are, I came upon the realization that I needed to downsize my living accommodations. This unfortunately meant giving up my spacious back yard and deck for a condo patio. This also meant giving up my big Weber charcoal grill and looking for a grill a bit more condo friendly.

So I set out in earnest to begin my research for a replacement for my beloved charcoal grill. Of course the replacement although needing to be smaller, still had to be a Weber. That's when I did what I always do when faced with the prospect of having to make a major buying decision - I went online to peruse the reviews.

Based on what I learned online, I settled for the Weber Q100 Portable Gas Grill and clicked the "Add to Cart" button at Amazon.

Being a charcoal griller from way back, I wasn't sure that food cooked on this portable gas grill from Weber was going to match the taste of my charcoal grill. However, was I greatly surprised!

The first thing I noticed about the Weber Q100 Portable Gas Grill upon opening the box was just how rugged and sturdy it felt. What struck me was that the grate was not the thin wire grate that you see on your run-of-the-mill portable gas grill. No - the grate on the Weber portable gas grill was made of heavy cast iron.

This results in even searing and heat distribution across the entire cooking surface area. And although the cooking surface was not as big as the one on my old Weber charcoal grill, you could easily cook for a family of four on this little beauty.

I was surprised at how quickly the grill heats up to cooking temperature and is ready for a nice sear after about 7 or 8 minutes of preheat. Everything we have cooked on the Weber portable gas grill from steaks to hamburgers to vegetables and even fish have come off tasting fantastic. You have to watch though because the foods cook fast and are ready in no time.

Another of my concerns with a small gas grill was the fuel source. While it is true that you can run this grill from the one pound propane cylinders that you can pick up at any hardware store or supermarket, you can also hook this grill up to either a five pounder or a twenty pound propane tank through the use of an adapter hose. While the smaller propane canisters are great when going to the beach for the day for instance, you want the ability to hook up to the larger propane tanks when grilling at home.

Having always used a charcoal grill to the exclusion of the gas grill, I found that this portable gas grill was so much easier to fire up. Simply turn the gas valve on and push the igniter button and the next thing you know you are grilling. No messing with lighter fluid or waiting for the coal to get hot enough to grill on.

If you have ever cleaned a charcoal grill you know first hand what a chore that can be. Even with the Weber One-Touch charcoal disposal method, charcoal disposal can be a bit messy. The Weber Q100 Portable Gas Grill on the other hand is a snap to clean up. I simply use a bit of aluminum foil along the bottom of the grill and change it out when I'm done grilling.

I must say that I made a pretty darn good investment with this portable gas grill and expect to get many years of faithful service from it. The great thing about this grill aside from the fact that it cooks a great meal is that not only will it fit nicely into my current living arrangements, it is ready to travel at a moments notice to the beach, the park, or even the tailgate party.

In Review: Bosch's ROS65VCL 5" and 6" Rear-Handle Random Orbit Sander Kit (With Vibration Control)

!±8± In Review: Bosch's ROS65VCL 5" and 6" Rear-Handle Random Orbit Sander Kit (With Vibration Control)

Bosch is well known for building some of the most impressive, most high-performance power tools in the industry today. Accordingly, it should come as no surprise that their ROS65VCL is one of the smoothest, most comfortable to operate industrial random orbit sanders to ever hit the market. Still, the tool glides, maneuvers and operates with such incredible smoothness, one can't help but be a little shocked.

Utilizing Bosch's exclusive suspension system, the sander offers superior vibration control eliminating nearly every hint of vibration or discomfort from the tool's operation. The tool handles with superior precision and delivers optimal operator control and, designed with multiple ergonomic soft-grips to further enhance user comfort and control, users enjoy significantly less working fatigue and better overall results. The tool's rear-handle position renders the tool comfortable and controllable and with a removable front handle, users can can achieve either greater controllability or greater access into tight or awkward spaces.

To get back to the basics, though, this random orbit sander is powered by 3.3Amps of juicy force and with a variable speed dial, users can optimize that power by setting it to specific materials and tasks. With this high-power motor and sanding versatility, the tool has the ability to perform an array of applications from fast and aggressive stock removal to delicate, smooth, and perfectly blended finishes. The tool's trigger switch additionally features a lock-on button for greater efficiency and usability.

The sander is built with a durable die-cast aluminum gear housing for enhanced durability, and because this housing is also engineered with an exclusive dual-bearing pad mount, the component additionally contributes to the tool's low vibration, low wobble performance and its overall longevity. And just in case you were concerned that that amazingly smooth, comfortable performance, ergonomic design, variable speed dial and durable construction just weren't going to cut the mustard, the ROS65VLC additionally offers two dust collection systems. Two. The thing is outfitted with both a microfilter dust canister (with an integrated paper filter and screw-off/on cap) and a vacuum hose connection with an airflow control feature.

Furthermore, to prevent swirl marks and encourage the most perfect finishes, the sander additionally features an integral pad dampening system and with high-performance, soft microcellular hook-and-loop backing pads, the sander is sensitive to, and truly ideal for, the many varying forms and contours of your materials and projects. Although this particular model (awesomely) functions with (and includes) both 5" and 6" diameter backing pads, the sander is available with just the 5" pad (model number ROS65VC-5) or just the 6" pad (ROS65VC-6). Again, this model is designed to work with both diameter sizes ensuring you have exactly the right amount of sander for each application.

Altogether, the sander, despite its comfortable, compact size, is a real Goliath in terms of performance. With an unparalleled smoothness of operation and seamless results in both aggressive and delicate applications, the sander will fast become a favorite in any tool repertoire.
